From Code-Switching to Kingdom-Minded
In today’s fast-paced world, especially in corporate environments, the pressure to conform and fit into predefined molds can be overwhelming. Whether it's through the subtle art of code-switching or the urge to present ourselves as infallible experts, many of us find ourselves navigating a delicate balance between authenticity and societal expectations. However, the true power of living a life aligned with God's anointing lies in embracing the authenticity that He provides. Here are some practical ways to do just that.
1. Be a Giver—Authentically
One of the most powerful ways to embrace God's anointing is through giving, not just of material things but of life, love, and words of wisdom. The key here is to give in a way that is true and authentic to who you are. Many people ask how I can be so bold in sharing my faith in corporate settings. If I’m being honest, I don’t share my faith with everyone. I listen for that still, small voice—the Holy Spirit nudging me—and if I'm prompted to share, I do. If not, I don’t force it. Sometimes, sharing might come in the form of showing compassion, giving others the space to be vulnerable and feel seen, or using stories to drive a biblical point home. The goal is to be genuine in your interactions, allowing God to guide you to those He has assigned to you.
2. Say No to Code-Switching
Code-switching is the practice of altering one's behavior, language, or appearance to fit into different cultural or social environments. While it might seem necessary in certain situations, it compromises your calling and clouds your clarity. When you code-switch, you’re actively trying to be someone you’re not, and it’s exhausting. More importantly, it’s not kingdom-minded. God has called you to be uniquely you. Embracing authenticity means showing up as your true self, and trusting that God’s anointing will empower you to navigate every space without the need to conform.
3. Admit When You Don’t Know
Admitting that you don’t know something doesn’t diminish your expertise; it highlights your humanity. In a world where everyone is trying to showcase their expertise, it’s okay to admit when you’re unsure or still figuring things out. What I’ve learned from interacting with various levels of leadership is that even experts have areas where they’re not experts. Just because you’re an expert in one thing doesn’t mean that expertise translates to everything, and that’s okay. It doesn’t diminish the value you bring—it shows you’re willing to learn and grow. Embracing this mindset allows God’s anointing to shine through your humility, making you a more relatable and authentic leader.
4. Be a Lifelong Learner
It’s perfectly fine to be an expert in your field while still having areas where you’re a student. In fact, that’s how we grow. Embracing God’s anointing means recognizing that you don’t have to have it all together all the time. There’s beauty in being teachable, in admitting that there’s always more to learn. This humility opens the door for God to pour into you, equipping you with the wisdom and knowledge needed for your journey. When you position yourself as a lifelong learner, you’re not just receiving information—you’re receiving God’s anointing in those areas of growth.
God’s anointing allows us to be the most authentic versions of ourselves.
When we embrace the uniqueness He has placed within us, we can walk confidently in our calling without the need for pretense or performance. Authenticity invites God’s presence into every aspect of our lives, enabling us to give, lead, and learn in ways that glorify Him. It’s in this authenticity that we find true freedom—the freedom to be who God created us to be, empowered by His anointing to impact the world around us.
