We have two dogs, Quinn and Kay Kay. Today’s devotional comes from a revelation I had while walking Kay Kay.
Kay Kay is a loving dog, but we often have to remind her to slow down when we walk. Many times, she walks fast because she is trying to prove that she can keep up with Quinn. She is measuring her productivity based on comparison to another dog.
The problem is that Kay Kay does not always pace herself well. There are moments when her breathing changes drastically because she is so committed to proving that she can walk at the same pace as Quinn. She is exhausting herself trying to keep up.
As I reminded Kay Kay to slow down, I said to her, “You have nothing to prove.”
And that statement stayed with me.
How often do we move through life as if we have something to prove?
We prove ourselves through how much we accomplish, how quickly we move, how much we can carry, how many people recognize us, or how well we measure up to someone else. We compare our pace, our progress, our careers, our relationships, our opportunities, and even our purpose to what we see happening around us.
But God never asked us to live that way.
God did not send His Son, Jesus, because we had something to prove. He sent His Son because we could not prove anything on our own. We could never work hard enough, accomplish enough, perform enough, or become enough to earn what Jesus freely gave us.
Jesus proved everything.
Yet so often, we move through life seeking the approval of people when God has already approved us. We move around seeking validation for our position when God has already positioned us. We chase external validation when what we really need is to remain postured in the presence of God.
There is a difference between being positioned by God and constantly trying to prove that we belong where He placed us.
Think about the workplace.
Have you ever found yourself working harder, taking on more, or moving faster because you were comparing yourself to someone else? Maybe a coworker got promoted. Maybe someone received recognition. Maybe someone seemed to be moving ahead while you felt like you were standing still.
And suddenly, you felt like you had something to prove.
You may start saying yes to everything. You may take on responsibilities that were never yours. You may push yourself beyond your capacity. You may start measuring your value by how quickly you advance or how much recognition you receive.
Like Kay Kay, you can exhaust yourself trying to keep up with someone else’s pace.
But your coworker’s promotion does not diminish your assignment. Their recognition does not cancel your contribution. Their pace does not have to become yours.
You have nothing to prove.
God has already approved you, positioned you, and equipped you for what He has called you to do. You do not have to run someone else’s race to prove that you belong in yours.
Sometimes the greatest evidence that we trust God is not how fast we move, but whether we are willing to slow down enough to follow His pace.
Your job is not to prove your worth.
Your job is to remain postured in His presence, trust His direction, and faithfully walk the path He has given you.
Kay Kay did not need to become Quinn to be loved. You do not have to become someone else to be worthy of what God has for you. You do not have to outrun someone else to prove that you are moving forward. You do not have to exhaust yourself trying to convince people of what God has already spoken over you.
You have nothing to prove.
Lord, forgive us for not trusting Your pace. Forgive us for comparing our journey to someone else’s and allowing comparison to make us move faster than You instructed. Teach us to rest in Your approval, trust Your positioning, and follow Your pace. Help us remember that we do not have to prove what You have already established. Keep us postured in Your presence and secure in who You have called us to be.
